Flash Mob by Jessica Sain

Flash Mob
By: Jessica Sain
Last week our class did a flash mob. We did it because we won it as a prize for earning twenty dollars at the Boosterthon fun run that came to our school. What we did was our whole class lined up and was really quiet. We walked out in the front of our school in between the office, the front door, and the library. We stood against the wall so it looked like we were just going to the library. Ms. Miller set up the boom box. Then out of nowhere we all start dancing to the ‘Cupid Shuffle’. While we danced to it the people in the office watched out the window and some other classes stopped to watch. We did it for two minutes and when we were done everyone clapped for us. It was so much fun (and we got out of scienceJ)! After the song was over we all lined up against the wall and walked quietly back to our classroom like nothing happened. It was so fun!!!

Secrets ........ Kept? By Audrey G.

Here is the first chapter of a novel that Audrey is writing.... Hope you all enjoy!

             Secrets……..Kept?
If you knew who he really was you would turn your back to him even if he wasn’t a ghost.
Run, that was all she could do to not get caught, but by whom she did not know. Kate was on a mission, a mission to save the world from evil. Yes, that’s right, Kate is a spy. Suddenly, she found herself in a warehouse. Then electric wires shot out of nowhere. “Who are you and what do you want with me.” Kate screams. Then the voice in the darkness said. “If I tell you my name now where’s the fun in that?” Suddenly, Kate screamed at the top of her lungs. Then the voice in the darkness replied, “You’re trying to be loud so someone can come find you nice try but you just happen to be in a sound proof warehouse.” Right then, Kate jumped up and kicked the hunched figure. After a hit like that the figure fell backwards but before she could unmask the figure it sprang up and ran away yelling “you know the saying keep you friends close but your enemies closer? Well you just happen to be doing that Kate.” she gasped “how do you know my name?” But the figure was long gone.
                                                            Chapter 1
It had been a long day for Kate with all the school work she had to do and what happened last night at the warehouse but the time had come for her favorite part of the day when she got to meet her friend Jordan. When he came up to her he said “Hi Kate lovely day isn’t it” she didn’t answer all she could do was stare, and I mean who wouldn’t, Jordan was standing in an odd angle was clutching his stomach and was wearing a frown. She started to say something but then Jordan smiled and said, “don’t worry Kate I’m fine” Just then Kate’s mind went completely blank, completely blank I tell you. So she said good-bye in a dazed voice and started to go home. But there were a couple of things she missed. For instance, the maniacal laughter in the background and there is another thing oh well if I tell you what it is now. Where’s the fun in that?
When Kate got home she got out some orange juice, at least she had been told it was orange. You see Kate is sort of color blind. She can see color but she doesn’t see the right color. For say orange juice looks blue and her brown hair looks lavender.
When she finished her homework she thought about the night before in the warehouse and apparently put two and two together but she didn’t worry it couldn’t be, could it? Now you may not know what she was thinking well you don’t need to know but it has something to do with this story. So she put on her glasses and ran to Jordan’s house but on the way she decided to stop at Emma’s house to tell her that they needed to go to the shop. So she stopped by and told her to meet her at the shop in ten minutes. Then she went on her way. When she walked into Jordan’s house using the key she had stolen blindly from him she went up into his room to find him finished with homework staring off into space. Before she said anything he stood up and jumped out the window she rushed to the window and looked down. Then for some odd reason she looked up then looked back at the room and there he was standing there looking at her like she was an alien. But then he smiled but Kate saw that he was possessed so she made a dazed face to not get attacked. Then a figure emerged from a dark corner in the room, it was hooded just like the figure from last night but the person under the cloak was a lot taller. Suddenly the person jumped up and pinned Kate to the ground then she blacked out for reasons she was yet to understand.
When she woke up she heard the men talking about her “What are you going to do to her?” Jordan asked now seeing that she was awake. The mysterious figure just stood there and stared at him. Then told Kate to leave, and not to worry about Jordan. So she left with a blank face because she was thinking, thinking about everything that had happened and when she got to the shop Emma said “Kate why in the world are you late?” Kate said nothing she just stared and as they went into the ice room and started the elevator they got in and Kate gasped “What is it?” said Emma. Then Kate replied “The hooded figure at Jordan’s house was my teacher.”

Hey! It's your HALF Birthday!

In our classroom, we love to celebrate each other and unfortunately, I haven't been the best at remembering birthdays.  Thankfully, one of our classmates is a PRO!  She not only remembers everyone's birthday, but she remembers everyone's HALF-Birthday too!  Don't know what a half birthday is?  According to dictionary.com, "A half-birthday is exactly six months before or after one's real birth date".  Want to know a great reason why we celebrate half birthdays?  Well, any student who is born in June, July, or August may miss the opportunity to ever celebrate during the school year with their classmates.  If you are really lucky, like Molly, you get to celebrate your real birth date and your half-birthday.  Molly's birth date is October 18th, this year she was able to celebrate on a 3day 2 night field trip to Camp Hanes (see picture).  Today Molly celebrated by wearing the same glasses with a label of "Half".  Thanks Molly for always remembering to celebrate each and every student in our class.  Today we celebrate you, on your half birthday.

500 Books to Read       By Audrey Gay
Miss Miller’s AM class has a goal; their goal is to read 500 books by the end of the year.  Right now they are in their 4th week of the third quarter and have read 173 books will they make it I’m going to interview a couple children in the Am class to see what they think.

This is McKenna Silver, she will answer a few questions.

Question: How do you feel about the goal? Is it too big, to small?
McKenna: I think it’s little over I mean there are only 17 kids in this class, and we’re in 5th grade we’re reading harry potter books, they are pretty big.

Question: What about the class do you know how many kids actually like to read and are actually trying to contribute?
McKenna: I think about a third of the class is trying to contribute, I also think not a lot of kids like to read and some people are just cheating themselves.

Question: Do you think the class is going to make it to their goal by the end of the year, if not how much do you think they will read?
McKenna: no I don’t think we will complete it, I also think we will only read 250.

Based on what she said she thinks we chose a goal that was too high because not that many people in are class are really committed, or don’t read that fast.

I think that if we keep reading we could read as much as we need to and that we should read for the fun of it, but still count the books.

It’s Pancake/Fraction time!!!!!
It’s fraction time. Everyone uses pies or pizzas to do fractions but we did something better we made pancakes. Pancakes are fun for everyone. How would pancakes help with fractions we asked? But we learned more about fractions then we thought. We learned that fractions help you with everything. You can do 38 mini pancakes. We have 17 people in our class and we all had two pancakes. We figured out that if we have pancake mix and it makes 20 pancakes that you can make one hundred mini pancakes. We got to see them cook. They got twice as big as they were when we poured them on. We had a worksheet that had fraction related questions like if you had a recipe that called for 5 cups how many ounces would you have. So next time you do fractions then use pancakes instead of pie or pizza.

Special Thanks to Mrs. Mitchell for the great lesson inspiration! Love You - Mean it!

Wonderous Word Wall

Recently we started a word wall on our back door. It shows words that we don’t know and then on the back it shows the definition. If we are reading and see a word that we do not know, we tell Ms. Miller and she will write it on a little strip of paper. Whoever found the word would get to look it up in the dictionary and write the definition on the back. The next day in class we would discuss the word and the definition then hang it up on the word wall. Some words we found so far are: painstakingly, which means taking great pains; very careful; diligent, tumultuous, which means confusedly or violently agitated, and cantankerous, which means a trouble maker bad-tempered, but those are only a few.

The Month of December

Our class experienced quite a lot of exciting things during the month of December, and unfortunately I am still not posting consistently. I am going to make the kids nag me each day until we post! :) Here is a snapshot of our class during the month of December...
